You know, being the ISP for all your employees would be 1 step closer to company town...
When they say their own ISP, I assume they just now have their own ASN and block of public IPs. They’ll be able to advertise BGP routes from those fancy new core switches. I think they’d balk at the minefield of paperwork that comes with being an actual ISP for residential or resale to business. Not uncommon for a big company to have their own ASN and route traffic like this. Still very cool!

65k is cheap as hell for infrastructure equipment. I wonder what they are quoting because 65k wouldn't even cover an enterprise grade router with licensing.

12:50 this is correct. Basically, routers advertise their IP routes using BGP, Border Gateway Protocol. So you would have two upstream links, one to Telus and one to Rogers. And you'd advertise your IP addresses on both. If Telus becomes unavailable, the IP addresses are still visible on the internet through Rogers. This is common in enterprise. (For context, I have set this up for employers and clients, and I own and use my own IP addresses privately)

9:40 in Germany towns having their own ISPs is VERY common. Basically every city has it's own company for city services. Including stuff like gas, internet and electricity.
Just. . . write it off as part of LinusTown infrastructure.
Look up Jared Mauch, a guy in Michigan who couldn't get one of the established ISPs to pull fiber to his house without paying the ISP a crazy amount of money. So he spent a crazy amount of money and became his own ISP. Pulled fiber for himself and about 70 other customers and is now expanding to serve about 600 more homes.

Our Electric provider pulled together with the counties it severed and rolled out fiber to the house to everyone it serves. Se we all now have access to dedicated 1 gig fiber and its been amazing and extremely solid.
A well off guy in the small rural town I grew up in, made an investment in the mid-90s for a dedicated fiber line and still has local customers using his WISP service as back up.
All I hear is that AJ, whoever that is, needs a massive raise after this is completed.
