Crows have a societal memory. In the middle 90’s, I used to sit at the fountain outside the library to study, and I always had Corn Nuts with me. I also had crows, watching, and after an afternoon accidental spill, they came down to collect my dropped snack. Within a day, I had one coming up and taking them from my fingers, within a week, the entire community. I was up there not long ago, for an event, and noticed that the fountain was removed when they refinished the library. I was standing there, with my service dog, reminiscing, and 2 crows whom I have likely never met landed, waddled over, and started chortling. I immediately went and bought them Corn Nuts, and 30 years just erased. Somehow, some way, they remembered the stories about the human and his Corn Nuts, and even somehow recognized me.

The ones escorting people through the woods might be be expecting you to hunt food, they do the same with wolves in exchange for getting to eat what's left over when the wolves are done. Might be good to share some snacks if you like having birb friends on the trail!

Crow fun fact: crows were often seen hunting with wolves, they spot large prey and lead a wolfpack towards it. The wolfs then "butcher" their prey and let crows pick at the bones giving them access to all the meat the wolfs left over - wich is more than enough to feed a crow This strategy also comes with the added bonus that no predator will attack the crows while they are on the ground eating. Something to remember about feeding crows and intelligent animals: they can develop expectations and become unhappy if you break them. If you are feeding crows consistently and cant do it at some point, or are choosing to stop, you may end up with an entire group of grows cawing around your house for hours at a time or potentially even holding a generational grudge against you. They're smart enough to understand a lot of things but their intelligence still has limits; understanding that you can't or won't do something right now, or even anymore, isn't something they can easily grasp. That and other people's interactions with you can cause grudges against them, resulting in attacks with minimal provocation. So just remember, when you're interacting with wildlife it's usually best not to create habits you cannot maintain indefinitely and to limit your interactions somewhat so you don't become the central figure of their lives. Not sayin' don't feed them, just sayin' be aware that it can backfire sharply. Think of them like a gang of toddlers; if a toddler wouldn't understand it, a crow probably won't either.
