In 2019, UFC fighter Polyana Viana was waiting for an Uber outside her apartment in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when a man approached her and asked for the time. He then demanded her cellphone and claimed he had a gun. Viana noticed the weapon felt “too soft,” so she suspected it was not real. She fought back with two punches and a kick, then used a rear naked choke to restrain him. When she checked the weapon, she found it was actually a cardboard cutout of a pistol. Viana held the man down while passersby called the police. Officers took him to a medical facility for his injuries before bringing him to the police station, where Viana filed a report. UFC president Dana White later praised her on social media. Viana said she was not seriously injured, although her hands hurt a little the next day. After leaving the police station, she simply went home and made dinner, as if nothing had happened.
