to be fair "trust us, we arent looking at your personal data," has always resulted in lawsuits because they looked at your personal data and sold it

I feel like it’d be another discord situation where it’d falsely flag, also I get stuff flagged as nudity in my photos app that is very clearly NOT nudity all the time

The reason why is because these systems are known for their false positives. 99.999 is not perfect. That's not even the real number. You will inevitably get An endless number of flags, if the that are not what you're looking for. Do you know how many unique images there are in the world? The number is literally uncountable. And any one of those can trigger one at any time. Discord recently had an issue where Spread sheet-like images would be flagged as that. Imagine every image in your camera roll. Someone makes a minor error, and all the data is useless. Not like it's turning up false flags to begin with. It's not even particularly good at finding novel ones out in the wild. They will inevitably get catalogued, but that's the limit. Some will slip through, some will get mistakenly flanged. This is specifically for photo DNA The main hashtag archiver for this kind of content.

the problem is that once you build the capability to do this, it’s much harder to say you cannot expand the capability to enforce other laws; then suddenly your phone is a pocket cop

Its almost like we all deserve privacy or something and have every right to ask companies to NOT SCAN OUR OWN PHOTOS. A father almost got arrested because he had pictures of his sons rash in his phone that he had sent to his doctor.

Protection of minors is always the excuse for mass surveillance. Look at the UK right now, best example

I get the intentions were good and the execution is harmless (as hashes are just encoded checksums of a file that can’t be reversed), but it’s definitely one of those “if they do it for this, they’ll invade elsewhere” and apple has a pretty strong security push in its marketing and execution.
I always had Carter pcs in my camera roll
