iPhone Survives 30,607-Metre Fall to Set Guinness World Record An iPhone protected only by a specially designed case has survived a fall from the stratosphere, helping its makers secure a Guinness World Records title. Phone-accessory company RhinoShield and British aerospace firm Sent Into Space conducted the experiment near Kiruna in northern Sweden. The device was carried into the atmosphere by a high-altitude balloon before being released from 30,607 metres—more than three times the cruising altitude of many commercial aircraft. The phone fell without a parachute and eventually landed in an uninhabited wilderness area. Under Guinness rules, the case had to make direct contact with the ground first. The device was later recovered without visible damage and remained operational. Reports identified the handset as an iPhone 17 Pro, although Guinness World Records described it simply as a mobile phone in its official report. It was fitted with RhinoShield’s AirX case, whose internal cushioning design was inspired by vehicle airbags and shock-absorbing sports footwear. The device also had to withstand extremely low temperatures and reduced atmospheric pressure during its ascent. Engineers conducted freezing and pressure tests before attempting the record. Tracking equipment narrowed the phone’s landing position to an area of approximately two kilometres. A search team required more than five hours to locate it in the remote landscape. The attempt received the Guinness title for the “highest drop of a mobile phone in a phone case over natural landforms.” However, it was primarily a company-organised durability demonstration rather than an independent comparison of different smartphones or cases.
