This seeming contradiction to how we normally think of how electricity operates is one of those interesting corner cases that can provide a lot of insight into how things actually work. The single wire transmission line - the Goubau Line or Goubau-Sommerfeld Line has be known for over a hundred years and found some use in the 60s and there are even a few exotic uses in particle accelerators today. When I first saw this video's title I thought you would be discussing the single wire earth return system used for rural electrification in New Zealand and Australia. This was much more interesting and new to me. I remember a few years back when the Veritasium channel went into some depth on the Poynting vector and tried to make the case that power does not flow in wires, but in fields. I don't think he got many converts, mostly due to his presentation style.
In Austraila, in the Outback, they use single Line transmission for Power as a way to save cost. Only run a single wire instead of two. The Earth then becomes the return path.
I looked it up and it works like this: The sender cone transforms the electrical current into a radio wave. That wave is guided to the receiver cone via the single wire. This works only with uhf and if the wire has no tight turns. On the receiver cone the em wave transformed is back into electricity. Because the em wave creates electric potential differences along the wire there is also a small currents along the wire. So this is basically wire guided signal transmission with em waves.
this is not electricity in the sense of 120 volts AC. this is an 893mhz oscillating signal.
Yes, the circuit is flowing to ground as radio waves. When you wrapped your hand around the wire and the signal disappeared from the TV, it was because your hand around the wire (and your body) created a capacitor connection from the wire to ground through your body..
Electrons with the Magnetic field , travel on the outside of a conductor, think of a Wave Guide, Ultra High frequency.
As an electrical engineer myself, this is so true. I thought i knew how things work. But after so many years of experience and research in physics, now i know, that i don't know the truth. The things we learn, helps a lot and are very useful. But just because that model works, doesn't mean that's actually how it works.

Ah, the memories.. Back in the late 1990's I worked as an RF engineer for a paging company and I recall somebody trying to sell a product called "G-Wave" or something like that which worked on the same principle you demonstrated to distribute signals in venues with poor signal coverage, mostly indoors. This is before DAS (Distributed Antenna Systems) became mainstream like it has today. They had created the installation documentation, and various types of hardware that allowed the wire to be routed all around, including around corners, through walls, etc. and it was also broadbanded. We tested it in our own office and it was just too sensitive to nearby clutter that would cause unpredictable attenuation of the different depending on where and how close to something the line crossed it, mostly air conditioning ductwork.
He's right, and it's not a contradiction of physics, just of the lumped-circuit approximation. A Goubau line guides energy as a surface wave in the field around the wire - closer to a fibre optic than to a circuit. The launcher (that coax-to-cone transition) converts the circuit-mode signal into the wave mode. Touching the wire kills the picture precisely because the energy lives in the field, not the copper.
