the firmware on apple silicon macs also stops working when the ssd dies because the firmware is stored there. meaning you will no longer be able to turn it on. intel macs did not have this problem. they use a separate chip for the firmware. not even external boot can save an apple silicon mac.

Everyone thought the same about 8GB M1 air when it launched in 2020. People were showing huge swap sizes and getting panicked over ssd lifespan. My M1 with 8GB worked flawlessly for 6 years when I was actively using it for development.

The MacBook Air M3 does the same thing. It always reserves the same 2.2GB but when I ran my buggy python code that accidentally made an infinitely long file it used up all my memory, turned into swap space, and then my laptop shit itself. I was able to get it working flawlessly though. Smaller ssds are already a problem on Mac, 100GiB is being taken up just by macOS and “System Files” whatever that is. And since I’m on a 256GB disk, it runs out quick, especially since I’m taking some classes at school that require 20GiB programs, and that electronics is my main hobby right now
