We have them for years here in germany and no they're not dangerous there is just a massiv lobby that doesn't like the concept.

Cory, you are showing a very big hearted and grown up view of this stuff and that is much to be admired. You are quite right ..... this solution in the UK is for those customers who are not in your segment at all! It's a great pity that many UK electricians are taklng such a mean spirited view of the potential and artificially inflating the safety risks?
We got a similar opposition (wouldn't exactly say lobby) to plug in solar here in finland. Every official agency fears that the extra 800W would melt the house wiring, and that electricity can only move in a single direction, from socket to plug, and never in the opposite direction.

They haven't updated the rules for Northern Ireland yet for plug in solar, but this year I began using a solar generator box and 2 panels and have reduced my bill from £440 a quarter to £145, I haven't connected to mains but I swapped all the lighting in my house to rechargeable bulbs and charge them from my box and I run my TV etc at night directly from the box, the only electric I pay for is generally just appliances in the kitchen, it has been life changing and a fun hobby, you feel like your beating the system.
I’m getting a full system but still wonder what will happen to this ‘cheap electricity at night’ when everyone in the UK has a battery and a car and charging them at night? Perhaps the tariff will disappear as there will be a raise in demand? I wouldn’t even be surprised if our government invents a charging tax’, like the mileage tax.
It's good to see another electrician support this. Too many are against a technology that has been proven to work for a long time in another country, just to protect their own interests.
Plug-in solar will lead to more people exploring the technology and end up with more work for the industry in the long run. I can see some of the points being made around safety but unfortunately the residential solar industry are in no position to lecture anybody on poor installation quality causing safety issues.
To really save money you need three things: * A current monitor on the mains (in the consumer unit) to avoid sending the utility "free" electricity. * Integrated storage, allowing you to deploy a lot more than 800W of solar and store the excess in the battery to be doled out later on. * And at least two residential panels (~800W). Preferably more. A dinky little amount of solar like 100W or 200W isn't gonna get you much. But, say, four residential panels slapped on top of a shed or a little Gazebo kit ... 1600Wp of solar, can translate to 8kWh/day of generation and take a significant chunk out of your daily usage. The U.K.'s still a bit braindead in that they somehow forgot about the battery bit, or otherwise want to treat it specially even though the whole unit is really nothing more than a glorified power station. -- And in terms of the danger... well. 800W / 230VAC = 3.5A. Hardly a threat even on a shared circuit. But I will say that a number of people have found at least one safety concern on the plug-in part not being hand-safe under certain circumstances. There are filter capacitors in the output stage that take a couple of seconds to bleed out when you unplug, so on several of these systems there is actually quite a substantial DC voltage on the now exposed pins of the plug just after you unplug the unit. It's not a driven voltage... its a small capacitor, but it can definitely give you a shock. And very easy to solve. -Matt
