The Far Lands were actually fixed in beta 1.8 (2011) by just increasing the distance they start at, so they're still there... at 1.8 septillion blocks out...

A few people have walked to the Farlands. Kurtjmac started his journey the earliest, but he wasn't the first one there. The first player to complete the journey (without using the Nether as a means of shortcut) was KilloCrazyMan in June 2020.
The intentional reintroduction of a bug is a rare sight in game development
The regular farlands got removed in beta days. That's why Kurt did the journey in beta 1.7
Just to add, killocrazyman was the first to reach the farlands. I want to say about 20ish people have made it
