This has gone down in football folklore as a goalkeeper howler and some quick thinking from Glenn Murray, but watch what the referee actually does. Firstly, there's arguably an offence by Murray. Law 12 lists “pushes” as a direct-free-kick offence and also says that a goalkeeper in control of the ball with their hands cannot be challenged by an opponent. Dunbavin appeals, the referee comes over and talks to the players, and play effectively stops for several seconds. The referee then gestures to the Carlisle players and Dunbavin quite clearly thinks the gesture includes him. He walks directly towards the referee, ball still in his hands, and crosses the edge of the penalty area. Yes, that's technically handball. But Dunbavin hasn't inexplicably forgotten where his penalty area ends. He's responding to what he believes is an instruction from the referee. The referee then blows for handball and allows Murray to take an immediate free kick, rolling it to Magno Vieira to score into an empty net while Dunbavin is still standing beside him. Even IFAB's guidance recognises the principle that “a team should not suffer because of a referee’s mistake.” So yes, Murray was alert and exploited the situation. But the referee potentially misses the original foul, creates the misunderstanding that causes the handball, and then allows Carlisle to exploit that same misunderstanding. The handball decision might be technically correct in isolation. The refereeing of the entire incident is dreadful.

Stupid goalkeeper. The ref obviously signals to play on. So why are you walking out of the box??? But let's say you made didn't notice and you made an honest mistake. Why are you letting go of the ball and keep looking at the ref???????? Hold the ball and go back to your goal, let your teammates get back.
