The Reverse Shroom is one of the most overpowered items in the entire game series. It's cheap and you can use it on yourself as well (which is usually preferred). When going backwards you have freedom of movement.. you can go back over a path split and go any direction you want. If you'd bounce into a wall (closed door and so on) you get to just go back as well. There's so many weird strategies you can do with a reverse mushroom.. I saw someone get a star and go to Boo like 3 times in one turn..
