My mum, who at the time was a nursing Ward Sister / Nurse Practitioner in charge of an Intensive Care Unit in a major hospital went into a ‘posh’ shop in York. She took a jacket off a hanger and exclaimed to herself shock at the price, not because she couldn’t afford it but because it wasn’t worth it. Seeing this a snooty young female shop assistant approached her and said ‘ I think Madam is in the wrong shop”. My mum just left. I wish, to this day, that I had been with her because I’d have gone to town on this assistant. A shop assistant looking down on my highly skilled and highly trained medical professional mum by a girl who works a till.

Looks like Rodeo Drive. People are starting to realize these high end products have massive mark ups and not worth the money

I am very surprised that you got treated poorly based on your appearance. And I have wondered about that ‘borrowed superiority’ the sales people indulge in for years now. People with real class don’t look down on anyone. 😊

I think sales assistants confuse themselves with the clients; they think they have the same status but if they were dismissed or transferred tomorrow I doubt whether their own clients would even notice or care. They serve as gatekeepers to products people desire, nothing more nothing less.

There is a saying that money talks and wealth whispers. You will find that the very wealthy people don't dress head to toe in designer clothes and wouldn't be seen dead in a t-shirt emblazoned with a designer name. These retailers really need a reality check. At the end of the day, £1,000 from a wealthy person is the same as £1,000 from someone who isn't.

Surprising how many stores were empty. Also, it seemed quite deserted!

The reason all those brands are struggling is that the general population barely hav money to put food on their table , let alone spend money on a purse or expensive shoes . Time are tough around the world right now and luxury can only be afforded by the 1%.

Yay Fancy Pants Friday

On a lower-end experiment. Some years ago, I walked into a certain shop in jeans and a sweatshirt, was doing my usual window shopping for computer bits and was left to browse all by myself. The next time I was wearing a suit and tie, the number of "Can I help you, sir" comments I got was like chalk and cheese.

Part of the problem is high building leases combined with declining revenue and they can’t afford to renew their lease. Also consider that some of those stores are by appointment only.

I used to love Bond Street & the surrounding area, now it I never go. Far too dangerous, I know many many people who have been mugged or had their phone stolen etc. I stick to Harrods & Sloane Street/Kings Road now, which is fabulous still.

I had a "Pretty Woman" moment after I got my first professional job. I had to buy five outfits + shoes. I didn't know how to match things so I went to Lord &Taylor because I heard the salespeople were trained to do that. Maybe it was because I was wearing jeans but nobody would help me. Long story short: I left and spent $5,000 at a boutique 3 blocks over. . Lord & Taylor is now out of business.

Really enjoying these London strolls again Hannah. Although it's sad to see all the empty units.
