Bihar Warns Against Eating Unfamiliar Fish Swept in by Nepal Floods The Bihar government has advised residents not to eat, buy or sell unfamiliar fish caught in floodwaters entering the state from Nepal, following reports that some people became ill after consuming unusually large or unknown varieties. The advisory was issued by Bihar’s Dairy, Fisheries and Animal Resources Department as swollen Nepal-fed rivers carried water into northern districts. Reports of unusual fish sightings have emerged from areas including East and West Champaran, Gopalganj and Bagaha, particularly around the Gandak river system. Officials explained that flooding can wash fish out of rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs and carry them over long distances. During this journey, the fish may remain in water contaminated by sewage, chemicals, dead animals, decomposing material or human remains. Such exposure can introduce harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi and toxins. The principal concern is contamination and the inability of residents to identify unfamiliar fish or determine whether they are safe for consumption. Authorities have asked people to avoid fish caught directly from floodwater until conditions stabilise. Unknown or abnormal-looking specimens should be reported to district fisheries officials rather than eaten or sold. Anyone experiencing vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, dizziness, breathing difficulty or another unusual symptom after consuming flood-caught fish should seek medical assistance immediately.
