In 1989, a pelican named Katta-kun became one of Japan’s most beloved animal celebrities after he began regularly visiting a local kindergarten in Ube, Yamaguchi. Katta-kun would fly from Tokiwa Park to Meiko Kindergarten, where he spent time around the children and became a familiar part of their daily lives. He was known for joining their activities, interacting with the kids, and even appearing to enjoy their music and dances. What started as an unusual visit from a wild pelican eventually became a heartwarming story that captured attention far beyond the local community. Katta-kun's story is a fascinating example of how an unexpected relationship between humans and wildlife can become part of local history. His visits turned him into a beloved figure in Ube, and his story continues to be remembered as one of Japan's most unusual animal stories. In 1985, a Great White Pelican named Katta-kun hatched at Tokiwa Park in Ube, Japan. Raised by humans, he was extremely tame and comfortable around people. Starting around 1988–1989, he began flying out of the park and visiting a nearby kindergarten less than a kilometer away. He walked into classrooms, hung out with the children, and danced to music, becoming a national sensation. Katta-kun lived to age 23 until he passed away in 2008, remaining a beloved local mascot.
