They were SO excited for the train to honk… Right up until it actually did. 🥹😅 The way everyone immediately took off and then the littlest one trying so hard to get those tiny legs moving. 😭 But underneath the funny moment is something every parent recognizes: Sometimes the world startles our kids. A loud noise. An unexpected fall. A barking dog. A sudden change. Something they thought would be fun that turns out to feel much bigger or scarier than they expected. We can’t prevent every startling moment nor do we need to. What we can do is be there afterward. Get close. Stay grounded. Offer comfort if they want it. Name what happened simply: “That was really loud! It startled you.” Let them borrow some of our calm while their nervous system settles. That’s co-regulation in everyday life. It doesn’t require a perfect response or a big intervention. Sometimes it’s simply a familiar adult communicating through their presence: You’re safe. I’m here. We can recover from this together. And sometimes, once everyone realizes they’re okay, the scary moment becomes the story they laugh about later. ❤️ Safety reminder: Children should always remain a safe distance from active railroad tracks and be closely supervised around railways. Little dude's like, " Why can't I run "
And he honked the politely way possible.. .
The baby trying SO HARD to get those little legs moving absolutely sent us. 😭😂 But can we also appreciate the engineer? The kids asked for the horn and he DELIVERED. Childhood memories are made of moments like this. Unexpected moments are part of childhood. ❤️ When something suddenly frightens or startles our kids, we don’t always need to rush in and convince them, “You’re fine!” Instead, we can acknowledge what happened, stay close and let our calm help them find theirs again. “That was loud! It startled you. I’m right here.” Those little moments of co-regulation teach something powerful: I can feel scared, recover, and feel safe again. 🥹 And yes, sometimes we can laugh with them about it afterward, too. 😂
