I knew a guy that used to work for Overnite transport that amped CBs and would pull up to the top of a mountain, touch his bumper to the guard rail, and be able to talk to someone TWO STATES AWAY.
I had a stinger antenna and 1500w unit that it you parked under the 76 stations overhang when they were closed the bulbs would glow when you keyed up
In the ‘90s, I had a neighbor down the street with one like this. My stereo speakers would blast out at 3AM every morning, even when the stereo was off…
I wish I met my dad in his 30s or 40s. Instead I've got a stupid complicated asf life story that my therapist only has a informed proper view of, from early on in my life that ends very unsatisfactory regarding my relationship with him. *He would have loved your content.. This shit is fun. Chris, you're right up there with Adam Savage, Mr. Hyneman, the crew that made mythbusters what it was for us growing up with them. I hope you find other crazy shit from Oklahoma as I'm a Norman Native. The ringer I've been through is a few beers in irl, but thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for making the strange cult of dudes you've cultivated. I'm also privy to open sauce, I might b an okie, but I ain't no coward. Science is it. Keep up the good work friend. Lmk if ur around for a beer lol
My grandfather was a radio operator for the Australian Navy during WWII. The radio equipment that he liberated from various ships and bases would make you cream your pants
Peoria, Illinois area in 1970s. there was one individual whose handle was E. F. Hutton, as the commercial stated, when E. F. Hutton speaks everybody listens. He had an old kicker from World War 2. It would make everybody's light bulbs, flicker, five miles away. You could hear him speak over your T. V. or your a m radio.
"Comeback 19. Can i get a radio check?" Everyone from 4 states and Canada can hear you.
me and my dad built a "legal limit" hf amp and after doing a contest we seen the neighbor tossing out a boom box and we asked why and he said he could hear voice from it even with it unpluged. he heared us calling CQ alot. lol
Even after the courts declared Chris to no longer be labeled as a criminal, he's still finds ways to be a menace to society. And I mean that as a complement. Keep up the great work.
I still hear Super Bowl skip chasers on channel 6 every time I’ve hooked up my HF SDR. There’s this one guy from Puerto Rico who must be transmitting at a kilowatt because I can hear them from Boston
If my mom took too long in the Winn Dixie, my dad would key up and override the stores paging system and tell her to hurry up.
Recreational electronic warfare module
Key down wars in Houston in the 80’s. It was common to see a kw or two in a trunk, dual alternator conversions. You could walk around with a fluorescent tube in hand and it would light up from all the rf in the air.
That is the reason we called those things “Foot Warmers”. I knew a guy running 1,000 watts on 27 MHz that would light up light bulbs while transmitting.
OMG ! dude I love this stuff and I am an early Gen x’er that really appreciates so much of what you bring forward. Of course back in the ‘80s I had a 40+80SSB Midland that was “tuned” in a CB shop over north of Dayton. I remember sitting in my driveway south of Springfield, OH. a ways, talking to folks 50 miles away in FM and folks in Chicago and Atlanta on SSB. It blew my mind. And my Radio Shack (oh, my beloved radio shack) power meter was still only showing 35-45 watts. And this always backed up my “hated” back then for those truckers with the super insane liner amps. Because they were almost always never set up and tuned right but could still blow away everyone else in a 20-50 miles radius when they keyed up.
I didnt get everything I was hearing but I enjoyed every second of it! Now to do some googling!
My mom had a hummingbird linear under the desk the base sat on. She called it her foot warmer. She'd promise to leave it off but when the tv started having seizures it was pretty obvious Mom was bouncing skip again.
Please send some documentation back to Stillwater 😂 Either the university, or the city, we love anything that proves there’s more than ag in Oklahoma
Waiting for him to get hold of an old Radio Shack analog scanner. Lift a couple of diodes and you're picking up old wireless handsets, neighbors intercom and baby monitors and analog cellular. Most of those bands have gone digital but not all.
I haven't seen a foot warmer like that in years. I used to have an old 250 watt Texas Star back when CB radio was still cool.
