US saw the word equal and was like hell no
if they just named it the America Earth Projection we wouldve voted in favor
Probably that's why Trump wanted Greenland in the first place ☠️
I think the one that suprised me the most is indonesia how fucking long it is
Man my government is full of toddlers. We are a joke
For toes who don't koes about this is the Mercator gets the shapes right while the equal gets the sizes when converting a sphere to a flat surface you have to sacrifice one
i mean greenland isn’t as big as it seems on the Mercator but it’s still as tall as the continental us and that’s still kinda crazy to think about, especially since so much of it is so sparsely populated
The equal projection has just as many problems as the murcador map. Just use a globe if you want a realistic projection.
My only problem with it is that it really distorts and skews locations on the edge of the map rather than having a direct look on them.
US playing villain once again
Equal Earth is just a Robinson larper, you'll never be him
171* countries voted. 6 abstained from the vote, but yeah, it's embarrassing to live in America rn
Never forget the two countries that voted against food being a right
This is literally a worse version of the Robinson projection. I have a feeling "Equal Earth" won literally because of the name and not being a good projection.
There is no such thing as an equal earth projection. You can't equally map a sphere onto a 2d rectangle
The Equal Earth map is cool in its sentiment but is fundamentally worse as a map than Mercator. The core issue with map projections is you have to choose to either preserve shape or preserve size, and you can't do both. Equal Earth preserves size at the severe detriment of shape. Countries with familiar and iconic shapes look like chicken nuggets on this new map.
Yaryna Ferencevych, the deputy U.S. representative to the U.N. Economic and Social Council, said in a statement explaining the U.S.’s vote that this measure, “mocks the work and purpose of this institution.” “Instead of focusing on genuine problems of international peace, prosperity, or good relations, this body is debating map projects from the 16th century, and their role in promoting reparations and ‘cognitive justice,’” she said. “Resolutions like this and the ideological agenda they promote, are barnacles on our work here, and the reason this institution is losing its credibility,” Ferencevych continued. “When the United Nations questions why it is losing legitimacy in the world, and is not taken seriously, time and again, we point to resolutions such as this.”
The reason this is needed is because a map needs to be morphed to fit on a globe, it isn't as easy as saying "alr let's change it"
The Mercator projection is by far the best projection that exists, it preserves shore lines and borders, allows easy maritime travel, and accurately shows relative position of most things.
I personally wish they went for the Robinson projection, as it accomplishes the same thing and looks much better than the Equal Earth projection
