The Cat Trained Like a Guard Dog

Nature and animals

American history, unusual animals, vintage television, and one of the strangest training stories of 1980 came together when a black cat named Mickey became famous for learning a routine normally taught to guard dogs. Mickey lived at a German Shepherd guard-dog school in San Carlos, California, owned by trainer Bob Altman. After spending so much time around the dogs, Mickey was trained through the same basic attack-and-release routine, learning to bite on command and stop when instructed. The unusual cat eventually appeared on NBC’s Real People in a segment called “Attack Cat,” which aired in November 1980. Viewers watched Mickey perform the routine alongside the kind of training usually associated with large working dogs. What made the story memorable was the contrast: instead of a German Shepherd responding to commands, it was a small black cat confidently performing a guard-dog style exercise.
