iPhone Duo Hands-on: My Honest First Take

I’m buying the fuck out of it. Been waiting so long with my 12 pro max, and finally, I can upgrade. The Air nearly got me last year but I knew it was one half of the coming foldable.

I can't wait until Apple sends me the "get ready" notification for the Duo.

I’ve been waiting for this for YEARS. There’s certain things I’ve bought blind and it worked out. Elden Ring, my car and now iphone duo lol

If I had disposable cash I would get one but I don’t and I can’t justify it based on my type of phone usage. I think if I traveled a lot or was a business owner I would go for it but as much as a really want it it’s just out of my range.

I think the reason for the missing Face ID is obvious - they would have to place it on the device twice, because what if you unfold and turn off the device - you would have to fold or turn the device first (or use PIN). The button is there one way or another, and that makes more sense than having to waste space for two Face ID sensors.

100% getting this as my first foldable. Form factor is right up my alley, I can pretty much ditch my iPad.

I’m getting for the simple fact that it’s different iPhone. For me there are 3 icons of the iPhone family. iPhone 1, iPhone 10, and now the Duo. So I can’t wait.

I appreciate what you’re saying about going to see it first. However, I absolutely will not be going to try it first because the phone is not available to view prior to its sale and I need to buy it the second the pre-order goes live. Furthermore, my use case for the phone is primarily consuming content like tv and videos and also research. Having a larger screen for all of these things dramatically improves with the user experience. I know this because if my iPad is available, I use that before I use my phone, but I can’t take my iPad with me everywhere I go. This I will be able to. For example, I’ll be at a nice restaurant bar and suddenly get the urge to research something about quantum physics or I’ll have a cool video I wanna show a friend that I took when I was touring in Europe which for representing detail, a larger screen is better than a smaller screen. So having something like this is a no-brainer. I absolutely cannot wait.

I think what’s going to happen is the iPhone duo will be gobbled up. And next year they will have the iPhone Duo pro. I’m waiting for that, with pencil pro support, top of the line camera and desktop class software like what’s on the iPad Pro line. Happy for those getting it. But to justify the cost I need a real productivity solution on par with iPad Pro.

Great walk through... 👍☕🤠🌵 Not only is it not technically feasible to have Face ID because of the thinness of the device, but you would potentially have to have two Face ID systems, one for each display; it would be more expensive, the device would have to be thicker, and you wouldn't be able to have an uninterrupted display experience on the inner display, as Apple has accomplished. You'd have to have pill cutouts on both the inner and outer display. This is the first iPhone in a decade without a notch or pill cutouts. This is a "win" as far as I am concerned. In typical Apple fashion, they went with the best solution. I use Touch ID on my MacBook all day long, so I don't see an issue, and it still works for authentication in apps, banking, etc. Your Apple Watch will also automatically unlock the Duo as well... .....and, YES! 👍😅 ....I am very tempted! .....I subscribed and entered on the website 😉 Maybe I'll get lucky. 🍀But what a great idea 💡to do a giveaway.... Yeh it’ll suit someone who is looking to replace their iPhone and iPad mini with one device and willing to pay the premium for it. Not for me but happy to go in the Apple store when it’s out and try it out.

The inner screen having a matte finish is a definite plus as far as I'm concerned. I've owned 3 Z Folds and the single thing I hated about every one of them was the inner display. They all looked and felt like cheap plastic. Even when using the S Pen which really felt like a squeegee on vinyl. The way the display picks up every fingerprint and smudge and is difficult to clean is truly it's superpower. I used the S Pen on that screen as much as possible to avoid touching it but then the screen was littered with S Pen marks. Apple creating a matte finish for the main display is a great decision and anyone who has used a foldable prior to getting a Duo will appreciate it even if they are complaining about it now before they've even had a chance to see it in person. The one thing I hope Apple does going forward is to develop a smaller Duo specific version of the Apple pencil. One with a softer tip that will make using it more comfortable since the display is a softer material than the outer screen. I'm not worried about damaging the screen because I know it's more durable than some others that seem to think it's more delicate than tissue paper.

Yes, I want an iPhone Duo! I take my 13 inch iPad Pro with me almost everywhere, I would love to have a Duo. I will trade-in my 17 Pro iPhone which I have to pay off first.

The screen looks a lot like the TCL nxtpaper tech, which honestly, is pretty incredible. You trade a little in color and depth of blacks and gain a ton in terms of anti-fingerprints and anti-reflection. It's a a trade I'd happily make anytime. Since I'm an Android person, here's to hoping that there is wider adoption of it going forward.
