The amount of air the image has to pass through in those extension tubes could keep a person alive under water for an extra 5 minutes.

You know, in the 1980s we just used a 6-foot long cardboard rolls to take pictures of bees eyes. The roll came from the inside of a roll of poster paper, then some electrical tape to get the sizes right.

To those that don't have gazillion extensions available: take a long tele lens, flip it around, close it's aperture to something like f/11, put that to the end of a long hollow extension tube, like a pringles tube or something even more whacky. Profit.

You need to stack focus. at that magnification your focus plan will be a small fraction of a millimeter.

How much light do you even need to just begin to see something with all that extension?
