Mobile Screen Protectors to Face Mandatory BIS Standards From April 2027 The Indian government is moving to regulate the quality of mobile screen protectors, including the tempered glass guards sold in phone shops across the country. Under the reported new rules, manufacturers and importers will need to meet Bureau of Indian Standards, or BIS, requirements before selling these products in India from April 1, 2027. Screen guards are a routine purchase for smartphone owners, but their quality can vary widely. Two protectors that look alike in a shop may differ in how well they fit a phone, withstand damage or remain clear during use. The move is intended to bring more consistent standards to a market where buyers often have little information beyond a brand name or a seller’s recommendation. For companies, mandatory BIS compliance would mean checking that their products meet the prescribed requirements and completing the necessary registration or certification before sale. Importers would face the same obligation for screen protectors brought into India. The rules are aimed at the products’ quality; they do not ban people from buying or using a screen guard. The change could make it easier for customers to identify compliant products. It may also increase costs for some manufacturers and sellers, although it is too early to say how much, if at all, retail prices will rise. With the start date set for April 2027, businesses have time to prepare. For phone users, the practical test will come later: whether the new standards make the inexpensive screen protector at the counter more dependable. Subscribe to FactTechz
