Professor Jim Al-Khalili explores one of the greatest mysteries in science: gravity. From Newton's apple and Einstein's revolutionary theory of relativity to black holes, gravitational waves and the strange way gravity bends time itself, this documentary reveals how gravity shapes the universe—and why scientists are still trying to understand its deepest secrets. Gravity increases in the evening, especially if you have been drinking.
Gravity increases the older you get. I can hardly pick myself up from a kneeling position.
"How Gravity Bends Space, Time and Reality" seems like a misleading title. It is generally believed that matter bends space and time, and what we call gravity is manifested by the curved geodesics within this bent space-time. So gravity is a consequence of bent space-time, not a cause of it.
Your videos are always terrific.i get so excited when i see a new one.
Gotta respect the scientists who come up with this stuff
I wish i was the apple falling at the end!!!😂😂with no consciousness and problems. And also able to swim.
I think once we totally understand space and time we will be able to traverse the universe like in the film Contact.
Your weight less but you are still in a gravitational field, you and the space station are together in a constant free fall around the planet! am I wrong?
The force of gravity at the ISS's altitude is 88% of that at the Earth's surface. Someone tricked this sweet little guy into thinking there was no gravity on the ISS. 0:45
Professor Jim Al-Khalili always is a joy to watch—he’s so good at explaining and keeping it entertaining too!
Professor Jim Al-Khalili is a good science communicator. He does it as good as Carl Sagan. But C. S. IS a legend for us science / astrophysics nerds!
The laws of gravity cannot be ignored or overcome. That is unless you go into space. It’s like the air we breathe. But it is fascinating.
It still messes with my head that gravity isn’t really a “force” pulling things down, but space and time themselves being curved. Somehow that explanation makes gravity even weirder.
So, does this mean that time stops at the event horizon of a black hole where the escape velocity velocity would be impossible to obtain?
Good video Jim, as always!!
Excellent episode! MOAR PLEASE!
Sounds to me like we are at the point in our scientific discovery's that we are calculating the speed of time. This makes me wonder weather a black hole is just a point in space where times speed is zero and in open space away from gravitational influence is there a limit to how fast time can flow?
As far as my potential discovered 10+physics equations told me: gravity bends space and time only on geodesic canvases; and that is exactly what Einstein's general relativity produces, no more no less. By the same token, relativists who bought Einstein's illusions since 1915 misled us. Even Einstein himself argued that black holes, gravitational wave functions, quantum entanglement (spooky ation at a distance) could not exist, based on his own published papers using his field equations. Einstein claimed that Mercury's perihelion precession is irrefutable evidence for his concept of spacetime via his famous equations (which were identical to Paul Gerber's equations 17 years earlier) "ε = 24π^3 a^2 / T^2 c^2 (1-e^2)" or ε = 6π GM / [c² a (1-e²)]. The cases of S* stars revolving around the black hole Sagittarius A* is no different from Mercury. My potentially discovered alternative equation for Mercury's perihelion precession angle (ε) is defined as: ε = 6π x (v/c)^2 / (1-e^2) or ε = (6π / Fdc^2) / (1-e^2) with Fdc as the orbital frequency of Mercury, mathematically defined as: Fdc = c/v My equation turns out to be way simpler than the Gerber-Einstein equations, and tells a different origin: Orbital frequency of celestial objects (Mercury or S* stars), and De Broglie might not have been surprised by my discovery, had he been alive), and this orbital frequency is generated by a quantum gravitational kick from the captor (the Sun or the black hole Sagittarius A* of mass M) with an energy of 2π x 3GM/c².
The accelerometer was a head F. I didn't know you could measure that. You are always a great explainer, thanks!
"Gravity is oppressive." You'll die without it.
