It turns out there's exactly one reason it's worth that price, and it's not the one you'd expect. First launched in May 2015, the original, first-generation Nvidia Shield TV is still officially supported - it holds the absolute record as the longest-supported Android device in consumer tech history
You skipped the part that it's a decent gaming/streaming system
The rabbit hole goes deeper! The Nvidia Shield TV Pro supports audio passthrough but it doesn't support all Dolby Vision Profiles, specifically Dolby Vision Profile 7 Full Enhancement Layer (FEL) which is found primarily on a number of UHD Blu-rays (and any MKV files ripped from them). The devices that do are mostly boxes with an AMLogic SoC running something like CoreElec or OSMC. The Ugoos AM6B+ is a popular Amlogic box that can have CoreElec installed on it, but the FireTV Cube Gen 3 and Xiaomi Mi Box S Gen 3 are other options that can have CoreElec installed alongisde their original OS and can be dual-booted between FireOS/Google TV and CoreElec depending on whether you want to stream from an internet streaming service or a local Plex/Jellyfin server.
you forgot the AI-Upscaler!!!!
I got mine in 2015. Aged like wine.
shield pro gang going strong- been using it every day for six years and it does everything
Also, Nvidia Shield has the best upscaling of lower res videos such as 1080p
You can make the UI faster in developer settings.
The sluggish UI is actually a specific setting. When you unlock Developer Tools on the Shield you can customize the UI speed and transition animations to make it feel quick and snappy. There are tons of great guides to overhauling your Shield to get it smooth fast and snappy performing way better than out of the box.
When the Shield TV first launched (well before the "Pro") the value proposition was aimed at gamers. The Shield TV features a pretty powerful Nvidia Tegra X1 chip that is actually capable of running most Android games natively. It even came with a controller! The nice thing about it is that, because you can connect bluetooth controllers, you can setup Steam and/or Moonlight and enjoy high quality, low latency game streaming from your desktop. It also supports GeForce NOW, which is a big plus.
You only used the shield for the tip of what it can be used for. You can also use it for gaming, that's where it separates itself from the competition.
I have a 2017 Shield TV and it's still in use to this day. Nobody else comes close.
At the beginning, SHIELD was for gaming....
also the Shield TV can be your Plex Server/transcoder for when you're outside your home and/or your friends, and when doing so it will manage a lot more transcoding streams at the same time, the network will be the limiter before the GPU starts struggling to transcode.
Shield TV is the only streaming box which I was able to setup for proper gaming. Specially when locally streaming Steam games via Moonlight+Sunshine setup, plus controllers. Its insane when you actually get it working.
Oh man, shout out to Scavenger's Reign. What a phenomenal show. Great video as usual.
I still have my 2019 models and it’s been great. But I do wish they had an updated model by now
Also, the Nvidia Shield I bought in 2016 is still getting updates to this day. That's one of the main reasons I wanted it because I knew Google would support it longterm.
UHD Blu-rays (and therefore also lossless MKV-rips) use Dolby Vision Profile 7, which usually include a Full Enhancement Layer (FEL), containing residual picture information that represents the difference between the 10-bit HDR10 base layer and the Dolby Vision master. When properly decoded alongside the base layer, the FEL helps reconstruct the intended Dolby Vision signal at up to 12-bit precision. Depending on the title, it can preserve finer tonal and color gradations, reduce quantization errors and banding, and restore highlight, shadow, luminance, or color information that is not fully present in the HDR10 base layer. The Shield simply throws away the FEL layer altogether. I.e. it does does not play whatever you throw at it flawlessly.
When did you film this? You can't find the Shield anywhere for $200 anymore.
