Fencing has changed from a martial art to a pure sport, where there is no consideration of combat. It's probably more fun to watch, but moves that leave you to basically certain death after the point is scored should not be viable. It just seems wrong (have fenced, my dad who fenced at a high level long ago also feels this way), which is what that smoopy guy was probably thinking. He was simply rude and inarticulate about it.
