This atomic force microscope is really cool because it lets you see the texture of samples on the nano-scale.
So what we want to try to test, is to see if 7000 grit sandpaper is actually 7000 grit.

Could be a fluke, really need to scan the entire surface to be sure

Well Amazon owes me a refund. 1 micron over is not acceptable

A little while ago, icspi lent us this atomic force microscope, and it's unlike any other microscope I've ever used. Instead of using light or electrons to image a sample, it actually touches it at the nanoscale:

Considering they're off by a micron from spec and this is cheap online mystery sandpaper, I'd say that's pretty good!

Did you compare it to a trusted 7000 grit sandpaper?

Modern day ea-nasir, the quality of the grit was a whole micrometer more than what was promised!😂

A lot of no name stuff on Amazon is technically within spec and finds some new, creative way to be useless

The real killer of cheaper sandpaper is grit contamination. You’d need to look at bigger sample size. You could have those 5 micron pieces but also 15-20 micron pieces scattered throughout, making the overall grit rating courser than what it says.

Yeah, I noticed long ago that grit is a fairly relative term. The same grit from different manufacturers performs different. It's especially noticable when you change types. 60 grit emory cloth is way more aggressive than 60 grit sand paper.

I would bet the backing material and adhesive are both lower quality and that's where the manufacturer likely saves money. So it'll probably fall apart faster but who knows 🤷♂️

I'm sure you checked multiple spots to rule out a random sparse microscopic piece that has a slight coverage difference.

After hearing Louis Rossman rant about Amazon fuses, and how the 2 amp ones took 10+ amps to do their job, and how Amazon refuses to do anything about it, I would honestly be surprised if the cheap Amazon stuff was actually even sandpaper lol

People saying only 1 micron, but at 5 microns it's only 4000 grit. Nearly twice as aggressive as stated. That said that's a very small sample.

It's probably because that stuff is designed to be used as wet sand paper with water it would fill up some of that gap making it closer to 3-4 microns
