That "solid state" capacitor is a tantalum polymer, or "tant-poly". The old tantalum capacitors (non-polymer) had a nasty failure case where exposure to voltages above the rated dielectric strength (voltage rating plus about 20%) caused oxygen production and thermal runaway within fissure boundaries in the tantalum, making them short circuit, catch fire, and go off like a firework. The new tantalum polymer dielectric uses a formulation that absorbs oxygen at the fissure boundaries instead of producing it, which prevents the capacitor from turning into a metal fire. However, tantalum polymers do still have the fail-short behaviour when exposed to excessive voltages, so it's worth being aware that as the other aluminium electrolytic caps on the board begin to age and exhibit greater ESR & impedance you will start to see additional power rail ripple that can lead to failure of that tantalum capacitor through voltage transients. This is one of the reasons that tantalum capacitors (even the polymer ones) have fallen out of favour. You can get aluminium polymer (alupoly) capacitors in the exact same form factor, and they do not exhibit the same short circuit failure mode. They are slightly more expensive, but it's a negligible cost delta for a one-off mod like this. Panasonic are the main manufacturer for that package type, but their patent expired a year or two ago so there are now a lot of Asian-market manufacturers with comparable products at a lower price (e.g. on LCSC). For the lifetime and cost of this device it probably doesn't matter all too much, but be aware of it for more expensive or unique devices that you want maximum reliability on.

I think after 28 years we can finally call it the game man color
Good to see my mod used to clean up the power. There is another mod some people use called the Clean Pro Sound mod that bypasses some resistors on the motherboard but it's mostly to help clean headphone noise.
"Because we're working with a mono speaker it doesn't really matter which wire goes where" This is not true. If you connect them incorrectly, the speaker will move inward when it should move outward. It will work, but sound worse with weaker bass.
he cant be stopped!!
A new Zac build without any 3D printed parts? inconceivable
Yooooooooo he found an "Easy project"
Zac, these are the videos we want. Somewhat easy, and non-repetitive.
It charges like the Magic Mouse now. Great video tho, it really seems like a beginner friendly project.

I absolutely LOVE retro console modding but at a point, you’re turning a $60 game console and costing $300 by the time you’re done with costs, shipping and your labor! But for $50, you can buy emulation system that already has all the same features even more (R36s etc) more controls and all the games already installed!!!
You should mod the Wii mini, adding back the GC ports, WiFi, etc and adding HDMI
I quite unironicly would like to see how the very first consumer gaming console would look like in his Remake style
If anyone watching this wants a modern GBC without doing the work themselves, the FPGBC from China is a good option at ~$85 to assemble and $100 prebuilt. Build quality is decent and video/audio are excellent with my only gripe being that the d-pad (original size of the GBC) is too small for adult hands, even smaller adult hands will cramp. The Modretro Chromatic is an even better choice w/ a more authentic feel and bigger buttons and insane build quality and the best game compatibility but you pay for it at $200. These FPGA handhelds even have a GB core along with the GBC core, so you can display GB games in a variety of color (and lack of color) pallets that the original GBC cannot.
