Imagine facing the world champions Brazil at a World Cup… with your BARE HANDS. That was Mwamba Kazadi, Zaire’s goalkeeper at the 1974 World Cup, just 1.75 metres tall and playing without gloves. But he wasn’t just another goalkeeper. Kazadi helped Congo win the 1968 Africa Cup of Nations, where he was named Player of the Tournament, and became African champion again in 1974. He died in 1998, aged only about 51. Two years later, he was named DR Congo’s Goalkeeper of the Century. Though Brazil won that match 3–0, nearly 50 years later, we’re still talking about the man who stood before Brazil with nothing between the ball and his bare hands. That's a world-class goalkeeper!
