Then I head home and make myself a big bowl of Malatang, a popular Chinese dish where you choose your own ingredients and cook them in a spicy, flavorful broth. And when dinner is ready, there’s no family gathering or friends around the table. Just me, a bowl of Malatang, and the lights of the city outside my balcony.
