Audio Described: Untold stories: The forgotten collectors | Black natural history

The expertise of Indigenous people, including enslaved people, was critical to the expeditions of successful European scientists. Their knowledge of their local nature and landscapes helped scientists like Henry Smeathman navigate their way and find specimens that they would have been unable to source alone. Unfortunately, their contributions were rarely recorded in history and have largely gone forgotten. We’ll discover the whole story behind one of our most important scientific collections and find out what we can learn from it to ensure history doesn’t continue to be repeated. This film was produced as part of Black History Month 2023. 00:00 Intro 1:40 Who was Henry Smeathman? 1:15 Why were Indigenous collectors not recorded in natural history records? 2:43 How can we acknowledge the past and learn from history? #NaturalHistoryMuseum #BlackHistory #Collect ---------------- Subscribe to our channel for the latest audio described natural history content https://www.youtube.com/@NaturalHistoryMuseum-AudioDesc?sub_confirmation=1 We're completely free to visit!
