You've reached the end
Oh geez, that founder is about to find out some hard life lessons
I bet you can stand a building up pretty quick without a structural engineer too.
I'm a live event technician. Most of what I do could be done by anyone with thumbs. I earn my money by spotting issues before they become problems
My work has nothing to do with tech but some principles are absolutely universal! And most managers are clueless like this.
The old adage: software engineers cost $1 for copying from stack overflow and $99999 dollars for knowing what to copy
Vibe coders are to the AI bubble what flippers were to the subprime mortgage collapse. We're all still dealing with the not-to-code horror shows that they inflicted on us en masse. The post collapse software hellscape will be as bad if not worse
I hear you. All of this is going to land on deaf ears. No point explaining it to them. Let shit break and then let them learn the same way everybody does. The hard way.
The fun part is when you tell someone who's vibe coded an app that their app isn't supportable. "But it's running on my computer" Just wait for the first update where your data structures need to be compatible with multiple builds at the same time.
I can already hear the answer the engineer that he will hire when things start to crack. “We need to rebuild the entire system from scratch”
1 more happy SE. He just avoided years of toxic management.
Oh, this gonna be fun. Can't wait until he found out about OpenExecutive
That's why you should never let a machine do something you can't do yourself the same for driving the same for building
"my bad, that GUI was a locally run overlay, and not a part of your actual app. If you want other machines to be able to run your app, you'll need an actual GUI" ~how I imagine vibe coded app launches go.
Importantly, a software engineer is also going to take the half a second it takes them to ask "could I do this without writing anything". I've seen people basically recreate functions of `sed` in a Python script, where the rest of the script is only really setting up the input and output.
I recently "fixed" my kitchen's clogged main sink by tying the spray nozzle on the side of the main faucet. I used electrical tape to hold down the button so the water would come out of that side. It *was* much cheaper and faster than a plumber would have been. Also, I fully intend to hire a plumber soon
Too true. The founder can now "program". Thats like being able to do basic DIY around the house. The job of a Software Engineer is the equivalent of hiring a qualified architect, civil engineer and builder for the house you plan on living in. The important thing is knowing where your limits are, sounds like the DIY guy doesn't realise there's more to building than being able to throw up a wall...
"for what I'm here, just to suffer?" btw firmware engineers are faster releasing code without testing lol 😅
I love this Alberta.. right on with us engineers ensuring stability.. no AI I am aware of hops on a conference bridge to sort things out 😂
A non technical person can have a conversation with Claude to really hammer out the pros and cons of restapi vs web sockets for their use case. They won't tho. But they can. But they won't.
Greed will always win out in the corporate world over logic and reason.
