A caiman basks on a sandbank, jaws open. Above it, on a root leaning over the shallows, a jaguar has not moved for twenty minutes. Then it drops, and aims for the one place no other big cat aims for: the back of the skull. In the flooded forests of the Amazon, three predators split the world between them. The jaguar rules the land and hunts in the water; the black caiman rules the dark river after sunset; the green anaconda rules the drowned forest in between. Each kills in a completely different way, and each method has a price. Follow them through piranha pools, armoured arapaima, warning-coloured poison frogs and a family of giant otters that can drive off a caiman, until the flood arrives and every border dissolves.
