The River That Turns Into a Rainbow #geography #geology #nature #naturalwonders

Caño Cristales Deep inside Colombia's Serranía de la Macarena lies a river that can transform into a spectacular natural rainbow. Caño Cristales—often called the "River of Five Colors"—flows through a landscape of ancient rocks, clear water, waterfalls, natural pools and lush tropical vegetation. But the extraordinary colors are not paint, minerals or artificial illumination. Much of the famous red and pink coloration comes from Macarenia clavigera, an aquatic plant that grows attached to the rocky riverbed. Under favorable seasonal conditions, these plants can cover sections of the riverbed with intense red and pink colors. The spectacle depends on a delicate combination of environmental conditions. Water depth, river flow, rainfall and sunlight all influence the conditions in which the aquatic vegetation thrives and becomes most visually striking. Meanwhile, flowing water has spent immense periods of time sculpting the resistant rocky channel, creating polished surfaces, cascades, channels and rounded erosional potholes. The result is one of Colombia's most extraordinary landscapes: an ancient geological environment transformed by living plants into a temporary liquid rainbow.
