This Guardrail Fed a Car Into a Wall

Autos and Vehicles

This guardrail just caught a car, then fed it straight into a concrete wall. A steel guardrail bends when it's hit, but a concrete bridge wall doesn't, so right where they meet the rail can cave into a pocket and the car slams the square concrete corner. That's why many bridges have a transition: the posts bunch up and the rail doubles, getting stiffer and stiffer, so the car slides along it onto the bridge. This 3D animation is a simplified simulation for illustration, not a crash test. #Shorts #RoadSafety #Engineering
