Why am I so obsessed with tulips? First, I love how many varieties there are. You can always experiment with something new. Second, I actually love that you plant them under winter. It’s the ultimate delayed reward—the result takes half a year. And yes, tulips are some of the first to brighten up the spring. Other plants take much longer to bloom, but bulbs are the first to peek through the snow. What else? Tulips give you joy in three stages: spring is for the flowers, mid-summer is for the bulbs (I love digging them up and checking how plump and mature they are), and autumn is for planting. You might ask, what’s the fun in planting? Well, there’s a real coziness to carefully arranging the bulbs in baskets and covering them with soil like a thick blanket, keeping them safe through the long Russian winter.
