The piraΓba is one of the most massive freshwater catfish in the world, native to the rivers and floodplains of South America, especially the Amazon and Orinoco river basins. Scientifically known as Brachyplatystoma filamentosum, this giant predator can grow to well over 6 feet long and weigh hundreds of pounds, with some exceptional fish reportedly reaching around 10 feet. PiraΓba are powerful hunters that use their barbels to sense prey in the dark, murky water and mainly eat other fish. They are also famous among anglers because of their incredible strength and long, powerful runs when hooked. Unlike many catfish that stay near the bottom, piraΓba can travel huge distances through major rivers and are capable of migrating between different parts of the Amazon system. Their streamlined bodies, huge mouths, and thick muscular build make them look almost like a freshwater version of a giant predatory shark. Because of their size and importance to the ecosystem, the piraΓba is one of the most legendary freshwater fish in South America.
