When u dig deeper into this, u will notice, its not just usb-c with magnets. This usb plug is shorter, curvy and sits way looser, so it unplugs very similar to Apple magsafe charge port. The main and biggest plus is that u dont have to use the magnets. U can just plug normal cable, it charges, and u can use it like any other usb, like for transferring data or peripherals. Apple magsafe connector is only for charging as i know

It's not a USB-C port with magnets, it's a proprietary port that's fully compatible with USB-C. If you look at the first frame of your video, you can see it is sloped on the top, and I'm assuming it's the same on the bottom, so that pulling downwards will pull it out and not sheer off the end. I'm assuming the inside of the laptop also pivots to help this, but I haven't seen that confirmed yet. The "magsafe" side of the cord will not plug into a regular USB-C port, which is why they added the same port to the power brick, and a normal USB-C to the other side of the cable, meaning you can use the charger for anything that charges over USB-C.

Sometimes it’s a good idea even if it doesn’t solve every issue.

Nah it works all directions I've seen videos. Honestly best thing that's came out of ms all year. If I ever get one I'm still installing Linux on it though

Don't get the snark on this one. This is a good idea. Magsafe like connection but can still be used as a normal USB-C port. Even the charging brick is reversible, so you can charge other devices by putting the magnetic end at the block, and use the normal USB-C end for other devices. That's good engineering.

Unlike magsafe, this one gives you an extra USB-C port when you're not using it which is always a welcome addition, I don't understand the hate. It also tears away just fine. Seen people yanking it already.

If it just wasn't a 90° angle and went straight in it might actually protect the port slightly

Huh. This is how the Surface power cable was handled at least as far back as the Surface 3 Pro. The power cable wasn't USB-C but retained that long look with a fin of contacts for just about everything. (The docking station also used it.) It pulled out easily but was held in place with magnets so you didn't accidentally punt you Surface across the room. Oh, and the pen had some magnets on the other side that it could "snap" on too. (Not strong enough to hold the pen in place, unfortunately, if you did something silly like pick up the Surface.

Why are people hating on this? This is a good thing that other Windows laptops should adopt.

It was me, the other month I was looking up lots of magnetic charging cables and options just because I was curious as to the differences. They take my browser history too seriously sorry

this might be one of the very few good things microsoft has done. people have tested it, and it works. also you can reverse it if you need to charge a normal usbc pc, the magnetic part goes on the charger, and normal usb comes

Actually, this is a huge win. It works exactly like magsafe (yes, you can actually have it pulled off) but it also works as a regular USB-C port if you need it to....
