It looks awesome! I might have missed it, but I’d be careful with taking the books on and off the shelf if it wasn’t sealed. I also wouldn’t keep any flat because I did this before and it ruined the back of the book because it peeled a whole patch off the shelf and partially absorbed into the book itself because of humidity.

destiny — i love you and this is absolutely gorgeous and your vision for this room is immaculate. and i’m saying this with the utmost love and i understand with having all these issues, hearing this from people can be annoying (because i’ve been there) 🥺 but i’m so worried for your beautiful books, like your OOP throne of glass covers! i’ve had so many books ruined just by painting my shelves without the annoying and meticulous prep. my dad works with this stuff and he went through the entire process of how to actually do it. and there’s so many good videos on details and a bunch of tips here in the comments too! i totally understand not wanting to repaint (THE PAIN) but maybe at least take the books off for now and add a seal like a lot of people have mentioned. especially since it’s already chipping on the cabinets! i just don’t want your beautiful books ruined, especially with such a beautiful library. 😭 once again love u

You should aaaalways sand anything you want to paint, and specifically IKEA furniture needs to be primed too.

I am so sorry, but all of that paint is going to be sticky, peel off, and ruin your books. I would get the books off asap. You can't paint over glossed particle board. I have ruined books myself by making this mistake in my 20's. Also, keep in mind that if you are going to have the books enclosed like that, you will have to keep a very close eye on the climate of the room. It will have to stay very cold and very dry. Heat rises to the ceiling, and with your special editions up high if you don't control the temp and humidity the glassed in cases will damage them.

Ideally you would use Liquid Sandpaper on a finished bookshelf. It will just keep peeling going forward.

Zinsser BIN primer saved my life when painting mine because it was a piece of cake for me. 😬 I let them cure for 30 days after painting as well. I HATE cords so I feel him on that 😂 It really did turn out beautiful and that blue is such a Des blue honestly. Thank you do dad, father in law, and Izac 😊

We (by we I mean my husband) sanded every single Billy Bookcase board and shelf and then primed them with BIN Zinsser shellac primer then painted them with SW Emerald Trim Enamel paint in Hale Navy then did the custom build-in’s. I then hand rolled and painted all of it for a final coat. I thought we researched it ALL. Wellllllll we had the same problem once we put the shelves in, the built in made the casing so tight that to get the shelves in it scraped the paint on the sides on every shelf for 6 bookcases. I had to repaint the whole dang thing again. But after waiting another 30 days for paint to cure we were able to put the books in and all is well. I commend you on taking on this project and I hope you love every minute you spend in there. Congratulations! 💙📚
