Check it out at https://www.odoo.com/ltt Sony really made an official Linux kit for the PlayStation 2, and somehow we got our hands on one 24 years later. The only problem is we’re missing some pretty important hardware, the discs are in Japanese, and getting this thing running is anything but straightforward. So naturally, we’re going to try anyway and see what Linux on a PS2 was actually like in 2002. At least it came with a disc.
Crazy how sony basically went from: you can do basically what you want with your console to "you'll own nothing and you'll be happy"
"24 years ago, when the year of the Linux desktop was just around the corner" That hurt in many ways
Three things from someone that owns the kit a) You can bypass the sync on green requirement by holding the following during boot: VGA Mode: Select + L1. NTSC Mode (TV): Select + R1. PAL Mode (TV): Select + R2 b) there was a list online somewhere of compatible unofficial drives. Maxtor's seemed to be the brand on the list the most. c) some the written games from the community were distributed as real discs but only as part of the PS2 magazine demo discs.

That PS2 startup sound made me feel something.
Linux on the ps2 lets go
Kinda surprised to see that LTT didn’t go SUPER in depth on this and the PS3 “version” of this.
You either die a hero or live long enough to become a villain... Oh how far you've fallen Sony
Fun fact: I live near the air force base that operated the PS3 super computer cluster. When it was put together, it was the 33rd largest super computer in the world, and it cost just 1/10th of what it would have cost to build a traditional super computer. It was used to analyze high definition satellite imagery. There are rumours among the other IT people I work with, that as recently as 8 years ago I think, they still had some of them running, mostly just as a cool bit of computing history.
You can actually region unlock a fat PS2 to play official imports, it just has to be a 50K model (ex. SCPH-50001)
my finger was on right arrow after seguey, but when I've seen Riley I just let it happen. good job

0:12 "24 years ago when the year of the Linux Desktop was juuuuust around the corner" 😂
I remember WAY back in the day, my stepdad was stationed in korea and I sent him my ps2 and he had it modded. It came back able to play burnt games with cheat codes for every single game. I allegedly started renting games from blockbuster, copying them and playing on my modded ps2. The good ol days of games.
