He Set the Perfect Trap to See Who He Could Trust. Trust can be difficult to judge because people often know exactly what to say when they want to appear trustworthy. And when we know our choices are being evaluated, it’s natural to become more careful about what we reveal. That’s why some of the clearest answers come when people don’t realize their actions may reveal anything at all. Without the chance to manage an impression, choices can expose what words easily conceal. In the end, trust becomes clearest not through what people promise, but through what their choices reveal when they have no reason to prove themselves. That's an old, tried & true counter intelligence trick. Let's say your organization is compromised, but you don't know by whom. You give every agent an exogenous variable of information & see which information makes it out of the organization: agent A is told white rhino, agent B is told blue shark, agent C is told purple zebra, etc. If a foreign intelligence service starts talking about purple zebras, you now know which service compromised which agent.

For those of you that don't know what he just did is what you would call the canary trap, this is usually used when a company suspects someone is leaking information to the press by giving them different time zones in which something is going to happen, that way it makes it easier to catch the one who leaked the information.
