I've been team jxl for years now, always happy to see the format gain more traction.
The ballooning disk prices are going to make space-efficient tech like this more popular.
This will literally save Petabytes of images around the world
Jpeg Pro Max Very clear presentation. Thanks, Joe. I'll give a 1 kb tiny thumbs up 👍🏻
Another feature of JPEG XL is progressive decoding, where a low-resolution placeholder version of the image is loaded first and then the full detailed image is rendered. EDIT: The original jpeg also had this feature as many said in the replies. Avif does not have this, but it's not that necessary with the computing speeds we have today.
Edge doesn't have it because Chromium/Chrome had JPEG XL support about 4 years ago and Google removed it because they didn't think it was worth maintaining as there was no ecosystem for it... and they invested heavily in one of its competitors, AVIF. Somehow JPEG XL returned!
This would be at least the third version of JPEG, no? There was the ill-fated JPEG 2000 before this.
At the time of this video, the Mac Safari browser does not support the animation feature of JPEG XL.
I played with JXL art. It's really fun. You can simulate cellular automata with it like Rule 110
I think what more important than app support is website support. Most people don't share image files, they share images but if whatsapp or discord send your perfectly normal image as a file you'll get pretty annoyed about it. Or if twitter says you can't set this file as your profile picture because it's "not an image format"
JPEG XL is a good idea.
AVIF is actually used a TON by photographers. Not only is it smaller than JPEG, it also has far less noticeable compression. I would wholeheartedly support mass adoption. The main reason photographers use JPEG at all is purely for compatibility, otherwise AVIF would be the format of choice for most of us. Personally, I always export in AVIF, then convert to JPEG if needed for sharing.
I like the idea of JPEG XL - but this name will end up confusing average users about the file format’s compression capabilities. When I hear “XL” as a normie I think “extra large” “bigger.” When the average person worried about file size is picking between JPEG vs. JPEG XL those normies will assume that the JPEG XL file is bigger so most will still pick JPEG what they are familiar with. I feel like choosing the name JPEG XL was a major semantic L for a format that compresses more than webp and jpeg itself. But with the file extension being supported everywhere I guess the genie is already out of the bottle unfortunately🧞
2:11 AI Datasets love this one trick!
As a game dev I hope engines get support for this format, because this could somewhat help build sizes. I'll definitely start using this though
As a linux user it's even supported there! KDE seems to already package support for it in it's gwenview (image viewer) and dolphin (file explorer) applications. Firefox and Chrome work, but I had to enable an experimental option in each of them.
I like my JPEGs beeg
The latest Firefox from this week, 158.0, now supports it out-the-box. You can open JPEG-XL in the Photos app on Windows 10 (make sure it's up to date), but File Explorer there can't show thumbnail previews of them (unless you install a third-party image viewer which offers a JXL previewer extension)
0:33 showing the firefox and safari support announcements would've been cool too...
This channel is very underrated, I appreciate you making videos about these obscure things that most tech channels do not cover.
