This week in "everything you love getting worse all the time"
Sounds like Rockstar isn't gonna want to play chicken with AI decompilers and risk losing out on the PC market
Yuji Hori is unaware that he did not create the game alone. He created his game by stealing thousands of hours of other people's efforts
“The aim isn’t to do the same stuff with less people”- queue every fucking layoff story of the last 4-5 years including old Timmy boy’s punchline of a company.
4:53 These "game A running in game B" are examples of passthrough mods not decompiles. For a decompile, you decompile the code to essentially the source code. That is not the case in pass through. In pass through you run both games on your machine at the same time. Both games run on their own engine, you use a 3rd program, a server or a relay, as a bridge or 'passthrough' between them so instructions in one game get converted in correlating instructions on the next game. So in this case Minecraft is sending instructions to the bridge, that gets translated into instructions for the Elden Ring engine. The reason this is different from a port or decompile is that no engine rework has happened, everything runs in its own native engine and then is translated over.
4:50 Those aren’t examples of decomp. Those are passthrough games, which are a different process entirely.
Yuji Hori doesn't realize that it wasn't just him that made that game. He used thousands of hours' worth of other people's efforts, that were then stolen, to make his little game.
If every game is going to use frontside art and programing with AI, I'll just go to my backlog. Rather play things made by humans.
VR user here. VR definitely could be doing better, but it's actually having a bit of a renaissance at the moment. VR mods for flat games are out of control right now. I've played more mods than actual VR games in the last, and it's grabbing a lot of new eyes from people who already love those games. It's anything from indie darlings like Project Zomboid, big AAA bangers like Star Wars Pod Racer, Titanfall 2, and the Dead Space remake, and games so old you wouldn't believe it was possible, like Diablo, Dungeon Keeper 2, and Perfect Dark. Still a good amount of kick in this hobby.
4:06 my favourite thing about these guys saying “look at what I made in 30 minutes with AI!!!” makes me wonder why they think I would buy that absolute shite? Even if it’s “good”, you didn’t put in any time or effort to make it. This shite is a scourge.
for anyone wondering, SkillUp does not talk about the PS5 being jailbroken, for the 2nd week in a row 🐘
Tim Sweeney never misses an opportunity to make himself look like an out of touch asshat. Unreal Engine 5 is already notoriously inefficient and horribly optimized out of the box and he thinks adding horribly inefficient AI code to it is going to improve that? When the massive subsidies on AI pricing go away as they will have to for that scam industry to ever have the slightest hope of being profitable, a lot of this will go away because no one but the biggest companies and richest individuals will be able to afford to use it.
3:10 this is just AI propaganda plain and simple. Epic Games' announcement is completely insane and against reality. As you can see on Bloomberg's report of how their own devs are reacting to it. Prohibiting all forms of non-AI code is nutjob cultist stuff. This is peak insanity and saying that it is just reality because all companies are using AI really minimizes the difference between using AI to assist on some tedious work and whatever the heck Epic are doing. There is also a lack of journalism in here because Epic's actions are just a strategy to lure investor attention away from the fact that their Starwars Marvel Shooter is being delayed indefinitely.
Tim Sweeney is the first "performative forest buyer" I've ever heard of...What a guy.
SkillUp sounds like what galvanized steel would sound like if it could talk
This industry keeps diving headfirst into things we fucking hate
This AI push feels like local art events being clogged up by stalls selling 3D Printed fidget toys for $40
I like how SkillUp said that first let's go over the basics but then got it wrong when it comes to how the passthrough works.
Never understood companies gloating about ai usage, like damn bro why proclaim to the world you are lazy and sloppy with your job.
Why are so many in the games industry talking themselves out of a job? They say it's super easy now and can "make" amazing games by themselves just by typing a prompt? If I agreed that means I can "make" the exact same shit as you, there is no skill disparity because we would all be reliant on whatever LLM model we are both using. They are essentially saying "I can't make anything better than what an LLM can so I am no longer needed" It's deeply embarrassing as a species this is where so many mentalities are heading. YOU ARE special, you CAN make unique amazing shit. If you can't and AI is the ceiling of your expression, then you are no longer better than the average Joe who can type whatever they want.
