I'm so confused about the PDF part. Why would it be bad to send a resume as a PDF? Receiving them as a sysadmin is way easier than fighting with potential malware in docx macros or, god forbid, tons of resumes in various Apple document formats that HR can't open because they don't have Macs.
I’m glad the comments all agree that the PDF conversation was batshit crazy. 😂
We got Linus using an Adblocker before GTA6
I have had so many places requesting my CV to specifically be in PDF, I just assumed it's the industry standard for recruiters.
It seems Luke and Linus are both cosplaying as Tom Scott this week
Blocking ads is a security control.
As a designer who works in print and packaging the PDF discussion hurt my soul
"I'm not gonna print your resume, I promise" -Luke 50% of recruiters printed mine and took notes during the interview The PDF discourse was a huge L from any POV imaginable For the whole time i as thinking "Linus is usually on point, I'm I taking crazy pills or are the kids that are wrong?"
Why pdfs? Because there's no guarantee that the recipient can read a Word file. The amount of times I've sent documents that were created in Microsoft Word and ended up garbled in the recipient's Microsoft Word is beyond my ability to keep track of. I've worked in companies where 50% of the time the recipient could not open Microsoft Word files that were created in Microsoft Word and opened in Microsoft Word, WITH THE SAME BUILD NUMBER, is flabbergasting. I ended up sitting as an intermediary between my colleague and the client, because in order to ensure that the document could even open, it had to be opened in Libre Office and then saved as a Microsoft Word file from Libre Office. I have never seen or heard of that with a pdf file. They suck if you want to copy text, but I've never had anyone claim they couldn't open one.
The PDF convo was the most mind boggling thing I've ever heard. They're portable, that's the name! Instead of having one file format that opens the same everywhere, you'd rather need to have every rich text document editor under the sun to catch all edgecases? Linus painting PDFs as forcing him to get one more program is crazy, just open it in your browser

Sending word files instead of PDFs is actually crazy
The ads that infuriate me the most are the ads that take up 90% of your screen real estate, and DON'T SCROLL ALONG. They just stay there, overing above the content, and sometimes you can't even remove them?! I've seen websites where you could only read the article by a two-lines thick space in-between ads, and even a few times when I couldn't even read the article no matter how I tried.
Good to know that I'm not the only one who thinks their take on PDFs is insane. Maybe they don't like them because Colton infected the PC and got their channels hacked?
2:07:50 Did I miss something with the PDFs? Who said that the HR guy has the same software that I have? Even opening a odt in Word messes up the formatting. Also lots of application interfaces of companies only take PDFs. Then there is the matter of readability. If you have an international resume with names and job titles from different languages a text editor will just mark lots of the text as spelled wrong. PDF does not have this problem. What exactly is the problem that they have with PDF?
Honestly a Markdown is an alright alternative to PDFs for a resume, but word or Google doc is super annoying because it will either look ugly and waste space or break if you open it in the wrong program/version. PDF is safe and reliable, and there is no obvious disadvantage to me?
Oh Linus, the reason why we use PDF is not because you can't edit it. Though there are ways to make it not editable even if you throw it back into a program, the main reason we use PDF is because the layout doesn't shift. As long as the settings are right, some people don't know how to optimize the size of their PDF, but as long as the settings are right, you can open it virtually anywhere. The layout is exactly the same, unlike using a Word document, where I might open it on my phone and it shifts everything around. I might open it on an older version of Word and everything shifts around, or even send it as an image. The problem you have with an image is that most messaging apps will compress it. I'm sending a client an invoice, and I send it as an image or as a Word document. Then it shifts around, and the formatting is wrong because they have one weird app on their phone. That is why I send it as a PDF: everything is legible and exactly where it should be. P.S. I am painting right now. My hands have a ton of oil paint, and I used Wispr Flow if you're wondering about the weird formatting of some sentences.
I pay for YouTube premium, but also use an ad blocker on the site, not because of ads (because I don't get them with Premium), but to rid the site of all the crap that YouTube seem to think I want to see. I now have a much cleaner YouTube experience as a result of losing: * Shorts in the side bar - gone * Shorts in my home and subscriptions feed - gone * Members only in my subscription feed - gone * End screen elements / after video suggestions - gone * 'Recommended' inserted into my subscription feed - gone * Block ambient mode I wouldn't care about all the crap above if I wasn't a premium subscriber, but why can't YouTube allow premium subscribers options to turn all the crap off? I guess there's no chance of this ever happening, as they won't even sync my playback preferences to my account, so I have to change settings on all my different browsers on all my different devices.
2:08:12 I hâte pfds as much as the next man. But try opening a CV doc with 3 columns and some accents in Word and know my pain. It looks different on 2016, 365 and 365 Web, and good luck to any organisation using google doc. Been complemented on design and told they couldn't read it on the same document. In the end I print to PDF as I know they'll see the same thing.
You can select and copy text from a PDF if it's done right and there are free PDF editors that can do that. The main advantage of a PDF is that it looks the same everywhere. With a Word document there are slight differences on web app and desktop app. On top of that if you try to print it by uploading the file to a web portal that might also render it slightly off. I think the PDF format is in need of disrupting, but it is the best we have right now for some spesific use cases.
