A friend of mine is left handed and went to catholic school run by nuns, and has described to me how the nuns were angry about not being allowed to beat or yell at her for being left handed. Which goes to show... Something.

I remember my granpa (who was left-handed) told me that in his school the teacher would hit him so hard on the hand it almost broke it. He had scares from the abuse π’

I went on a school trip to the Black Country* in Y9 and we had a sample lesson of what it wouldβve been like in the 1800s. One of the teachers got caned, we got yelled at for our nails not being neat enough, everyone was made to write right handed. It was really interesting actually *Before anyone gets very horrified itβs called that because of all the old coal mines there. Itβs up by Birmingham!

My dad is a leftie and he was forced to use his right hand as a child in the 50s. He also got smacked with a ruler for using his left hand. He still writes right handed.

My grandpa apparently still has problems with his left hand, because of how often he was punished for using it in school

As a left handed person, I am SO GLAD they don't still do stuff like that

My mate, back in the 60s, had a horrible strict headmaster who lived for public humiliation and the dreaded cane. Every assembly this headmaster would gather the worst offenders and get them to drop their pants and they'd get a whipping in front of the entire school. My mate was a terror .. still is π .. but he'd had enough of this π©so next assembly ... once this headmaster called him over, my mate grabbed the cane, grabbed the headmaster by the hair.. yanked down his pants and gave him this arrogant teacher the walloping of his life much to the amusement of I'm guessing everyone π He was expelled (πobviously) but has achieved legendary status over the years π€π»
