PSA: Graduating here also results in promoting from a midshipman (cadet) to a commissioned officer in the US Navy or Marine Corps. As such, you will never wear the midshipman cover (what they’re throwing) again, meaning they wouldn’t have to buy a new one. Furthermore, it is considered by some to be bad luck to catch one’s own cover; you’re supposed to be moving on from one part of your life to the next. Source: I’m a few rows behind these classmates of mine

At my high school graduation it would have been REALLY FUN to throw my cap, tho I also think I would’ve been a tad sad to lose it, but I had like 6-8 bobby pins I asked my dancer friend to use to clip the cap on my head because the ceremony was outside!
