When a redditor ran out of storage space, they decided to hit "Add to Archive" on their Windows folder. But does WinRAR actually let you compress your operating system? Will it completely wreck your PC? THIS. This is what I want more of- TECH TIPS. This is a fun, informative video about technology. I would love to see more of these. Video idea- I would love to see an Nvidia App guide now that the Nvidia Control panel is going away. Most existing tutorials simply say "configure this option this way" but do not fully explain what the option means. I think LTT could do a good job of this.
The issue was that they were not a deleted user 13 years ago
I always believe deleted user from 7 years ago
I learned from Reddit that the best way to compress my files was to "Sign In To View This Content" - hope this helps someone!
Reddit is basically russian roulette, but theres landmines every third round, and literal nukes every 36
Fitgirl is the queen of shrunken down file sizes. Cough
There are only 2 filetypes: ZIP and TXT
Surprised you didn't talk about the NTFS compression option
4:30 editor cut away just as Linus drops the hard drive (or hard-drive-shaped prop) in his left hand? Too funny!
0:14 Hearing "In this economy?" when it actually is related to the economy feels off somehow haha
My rule of thumb I give for the non-tech savvy is that if an idea you read from some rando on the internet seems simple and makes you ask “why aren’t we all just doing [x]?” Then it’s probably something that either breaks something else,or is already being done behind the scenes, completely transparent to the user.
So thats why windows says "size on disk"

I love Linus suggesting that filesystem compression is not very useful. Meanwhile I am sitting here with 400GB of data on my 250GB SSD. Windows' NTFS filesystem compression has some usability issues, but it still extremely useful. BTRFS' filesystem compression on Linux is where the money is at. I use that on everything nowadays. People will claim that modern formats are already compressed, which is true, but try using Windows' filesystem compression on a game like Ark Survival Evolved; Suddenly you have >50GB of extra free storage.
The "why not both" at 5:30 was great
Doesn't Windows literally have a checkbox that says "compress this drive to save space"? Why didn't the Redditor just use that?
in this economy it's nice to get educational videos like these which also don't involve any shiny new product, great work. This feels like a mini documentary, or a mega techquickie.
I use squashfs and zstd compression all the time for huge EDA softwares. Not only it compresses 1M+ files from 80GB to 20GB, but also as the whole thing is just a massive blob of data it makes transferring it to other machines so much faster. Highly recommended if u are on linux.
1:45 made me think someone was calling me
Reddit is a former shell of itself. 5 years ago most of the stuff you found on the website was either gold or at least useful. Nowadays it's so full of whataboutism and bots that the platform may as well be considered half dead.
