I'm reminded of a short story by Ray Bradbury called "The Scythe" in which a man and his family take over a remote farm. The man goes out each day to harvest the fields, and at first nothing seems abnormal. He eventually comes to understand that each stalk of grain he cuts represents a human life. The man has inherited the job of Death. It gets dark from there. It's not hard to find the story for free online, if you're interested.
