To everyone saying they would've responded differently: how wonderfully privileged you are to have the power and respect to be allowed to stand up for yourself. Residential schools were exactly like this, except that if you did what she did, they'd kill you sooner than fight you. My ancestors weren't allowed to keep their language, knowledge of anything not being taught, or even their names. These places were made to beat children into submission and get rid of anyone remotely strong enough to fight back.
