More than half the undercarriage rollers are leaking oil, one has completely seized, and now all 16 need replacing! We've already had this Hitachi ZX225 excavator in the workshop for repairs a couple of times, but not there's another big job to do. We knew the rollers on this Hitachi ZX225 excavator were getting towards the end of their life when we replaced the track idlers, but now it's time to get them sorted before they cause any further damage. The biggest challenge is replacing all 16 rollers, each weighing around 35kg, with limited access underneath the machine and only one person to do the job. Before getting started, Kurtis releases the track tension and separates the track chain to make room to remove the old rollers. But rather than struggle with lifting and positioning each heavy roller by hand, he comes up with a simple idea using some scrap steel, a bit of welding and our overhead crane to make a custom lifting jig. With the jig ready to go, it's time to work through both sides of the excavator, removing the old bottom rollers, cleaning up the mounting surfaces and fitting all 16 new rollers. There are some seriously tight bolts to deal with along the way, and once the undercarriage work is finished, Kurtis also changes the oil in both final drive assemblies.
