Indian construction has a problem

Tech

While many parts of the construction process in India have been automated by machines, an enormous amount of manual human labour is still required when it comes to applying layers of putty, sanding walls, applying primer and painting. This is all done by hand. Centa Painter, a robot developed by a Bengaluru-based company called Pace Robotics, wants to change that. It uses more than 20 sensors, including cameras and LiDAR, to understand its surroundings. This allows it to identify walls, detect windows and other openings, and figure out which surfaces need to be worked on without requiring a pre-loaded floor plan. It can sense how uneven a wall is and adjust its sanding to create a smoother surface. By switching between different attachments, the robot can perform multiple finishing jobs. Pace Robotics says that this robot can complete certain tasks up to 10x faster than conventional manual methods, while requiring up to 80% less manpower. Indian real estate developer Sobha has already purchased and deployed two of these machines on actual construction sites, and they’ve also placed a repeat order.
