Cassie's core issue is that her father abandoning her made her crave men's attentions, no matter what they do to her. She can't reject them. Rejecting them would be like rejecting her father.
I really think people baby Cassie too much. Yes, her father abandoned her, but Maddy's father and mother fought or didn't speak. It got so bad that Maddy had to stay with Cassie's family. There is no excuse for Cassie's behavior. She had parents that fought, and she has trauma, but that's not exclusive to her. Maddy grew up in a home with a passive mother, a drunk father who couldn't pay the bills, and no examples of healthy love. Maddy still finds her self worth and cuts off Nate. Maddy has been dealing with her toxic environment her WHOLE LIFE, and as Cassie puts it "our's [father] just stopped calling". Maddy is a case study on how to adapt to move beyond your trauma, Cassie is stuck in hers.
This was a very interesting video essay. I think it's important to note that just bc Maddie is more powerful than Cassie/ has more control in certain lights, that doesn't make her a better PERSON. All these characters are DEEPLY flawed in their own way but I respect the rhetorical tool of them being foils to eachother/ 2 sides of the same coin......

Unfortunately, Cassi "winning" is also a truth that happens in real life. A girl who's anxiously attached, emotionally dependant, constantly begging and chasing (she calls nate 38 times in one episode) ALWAYS ends up being in the fairytale marriage that in reality is miserable underneath the big wedding and loving husband and wife facade, but a girl like Maddy who stands up for herself is always being called "aggresive" and "arrogant".. and ends up single..

This video puts Maddie in a way too positive light lmaooo we seem to neglect the fact that she endured PHYSICAL VIOLENCE and decided to stay for a while after that. The claim that she has clear boundaries is automatically not valid. + just because you only accept “expensive” gifts doesn’t mean your bar is high, you’re just materialistic and superficial. Maddie continuously tried to reaffirm her boundaries aggressively, which is not the same as being firm. She was just as flexible as Cassie in that way if we really think about it.
